Hanzo initially wasn't sure what had woken him. That was until he heard a loud sob next to him.

He glanced over to where Kuai lay beside him. The man was positively quaking, curled up on himself and crying so hard he hiccuped between his breathes. He was muttering to himself.

"Kuai Liang?" He softly asked, he got no reply. He must be asleep... a nightmare, likely. He reached a hand over to Kuai's shoulder, trying to shake him awake. "Wake up, Kuai Liang."

Kuai's shuddering got progressively more violent, his cries louder. Hanzo draped himself over the other man, trying to hold him down for fear he would hurt himself.

"Kuai Liang, Snowflake, wake up," he said gently, stroking Kuai's face. "Wake up, love, please."

Kuai eyes shot open, and Hanzo saw nothing but terror reflected in them. The blood curdling scream that tore from Kuai's lips made Hanzo jump back in shock.

Kuai began to thrash, screaming all the while, and Hanzo had to shake himself from his shock to pin Kuai down again. Kuai wailed as he was pushed down into the mattress. Hanzo had witnessed Kuai's nightmares before, yet it had never been this bad before.

"It's okay, Kuai Liang, it's okay," Hanzo tried to assure the other, as his cries began to quieten slightly and he stopped struggling as much. "It's not real, whatever you saw wasn't real."

"P-Please," Kuai managed to get out through his heavy breathing. "Please don't hurt me."

The plea broke Hanzo's heart. He reached to cup Kuai's cheeks, "listen to me," he started softly, "you're safe, nothing is going to hurt you."

Kuai looked up at him, like he was searching for something. His breathing had slowed down now, but every now and then it hitched. Kuai's hands came to meet Hanzo's.

"Are you back with me, love?" Hanzo gently asked. Despite everything, Kuai still looked at him like he was still scared of something.

"Han- Hanzo?" Kuai's voice was thick with confusion. "You... You're not... Scorpion?"

The question hit Hanzo square in the chest and his heart absolutely dropped. The nightmare was about me. Kuai had never had a nightmare about him while they were together before. He had no idea what to do. What could he ever say to make it better?

Hanzo pulled away, gently encouraging Kuai to sit up.

"I'm sorry." Kuai's voice was small, hoarse from the screaming and just like something inside him was just broken. "You were... were trying to kill me."

There was nothing Hanzo could say, at least nothing he could think of. Instead he chose to wrap his arms around his beloved, pulling him close in an embrace. As Kuai softly sobbed into his shoulder, Hanzo made a promise to himself that this was a nightmare that would never come true.
